ADDIE JOHNSON & ALBEE CREEK CAMPGROUND (Rockefeller Forest)

Begin & End - The Tall Tree parking area by Bull Creek.

Length - 4.5 miles (partial loop).

Elevation Gain/Loss - 800 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Historic grave site, spring flowers, old growth redwoods.

Alternatives - May forgo hike to Albee Cr. camp area11 or could extend the hike by

including the 2 loops in the campground (sites 5 thru 35).

Constraints - Possible muddy areas on the trail to Albee Cr. during the winter, heat in the summer.

Best Months to Hike: Apr May June July


BULL CREEK (Rockefeller Forest)

Begin & End - The Tall Tree parking area on Bull Creek or mouth of Bull Cr. parking area. Hike one

side of Bull Creek going and the other when returning.

Length - 8-mile loop.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Old growth redwoods.

Variations - If the bridges are not in, the trail could be hiked both ways on the north side of Bull Creek.

Constraints - Bridges across Bull Cr. only present in the summer, poison oak along the north side trail.

Best Months to Hike: June July Aug


CUNEO CREEK/POLE LINE RD. (Rockefeller Forest)

Begin & End - The Cuneo Creek Camp Ground (entry as the Mattole Rd. starts up the hill and just

past the relocated Bull Creek Cemetery). Hike Indian Orchard Trail and Pole Line Rd.

Length - 7-mile loop.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 1,200 feet.

Difficulty - Strenuous.

Main Features - Coast Range views.

Alternatives - None.

Constraints - Creek crossings, camp ground closure during winter, some fairly steep sections.

Best Months to Hike: May June July . Oct Nov


FOUNDERS GROVE (Humboldt Redwoods)

Begin & End - The Founders Grove parking area.

Length - 3 miles (for both Founders Grove circuits).

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Magnificent old growth redwood views, an albino redwood if extend the hike to

Women’s Federation Grove.

Alternatives - There are two circuits at Founders Grove and either one or both may be hiked.

Constraints - Poison oak if the hikes extends to the Women’s Federation Grove.

Best Months to Hike: All Months


GRASSHOPPER PEAK (Humboldt Redwoods State Park)

Begin & End - The parking area at either the Burlington Visitor Center or the parking area at the

Grasshopper Creek Rd. in Rockefeller Forest.

Length - 13.0 miles. (trail from Burlington a bit shorter than from the Bull Creek side).

Elevation Gain/Loss - 3,000 feet.

Difficulty - Strenuous.

Main Features - Coast range views.

Alternatives - None.

Constraints - Extensive climb, bridge across the river needed if start at Burlington.

Best Months to Hike: Jan Feb Mar Apr May . Sept Oct Nov Dec


HANSON MEADOWS (Rockefeller Redwoods)

Begin & End - Either the start of the Grasshopper Peak Rd. (to the south just after passing the

entrance to the Albee Creek Campground and crossing the Bull Creek bridge on the Mattole

Rd.) or the entry to the Baxter Environmental Camp 0.25 mi. further on the Mattole Rd.

Length - 12 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 2,000 feet.

Difficulty - Strenuous.

Main Features - Views of the Coast Range.

Alternatives - May be shortened by about 3.0 miles by turning back at Whiskey Flat Trail Camp or

extended another 1.5 miles by continuing to the Hanson Ridge Trail Camp.

Constraints - Summer heat.

Best Months to Hike: Mar Apr May


JOHNSON CAMP LOOP (Rockefeller Forest)

Begin & End - Either from the Tall Tree parking area by Bull Creek or from Grasshopper Peak Rd.

that goes south from the Mattole Rd. a short way past past the Albee Cr. Campground access

and the bridge crossing Bull Creek.

Length - 12-mile loop.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 1,300 ft. Difficulty - Strenuous.

Main Features - Forest from old growth redwood to tan oak.

Alternatives - Could hike both ways on the trail and avoid hiking on the road.

Constraints - Need bridge to cross Bull Creek if start at Tall Tree parking area, some fairly steep

sections on the road.

Best Months to Hike: Jan Feb Mar Apr May . Sept Oct Nov


LOOKS PRAIRIE - PEAVINE RIDGE - THORNTON LOOP (Rockfeller Redwoods)

Begin and End - Parking area Tall Trees parking area by Bull Creek, the Looks Prairie Trail starts by

Harper Creek about 0.25 downstream or could start and finish at the Albee Creek Campground.

Length - 12 miles (a measure is not readily available).

Elevation Gain/Loss - 2,200 feet.

Difficulty - Strenuous.

Main Features - Coastal mountain and prairie views.

Constraints - None presently known.

Best Months to Hike: Apr May June . Oct Nov


MATTOLE RIVER MOUTH to CAVES (Petrolia)

Begin & End - The parking area at end of Lighthouse Rd. (near mouth of Mattole River).

Length - 5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Coastal views, caves not noteworthy.

Alternatives - None.

Constraints - Long drive, only feasible if Mattole River mouth is closed.

Best Months to Hike: July Aug Sept Oct


MCNUTT GULCH to CAVES (Between Cape Mendocino and Petrolia)

Begin & End -  McNutt Gulch parking area

Length - 3.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Coastal views, caves not noteworthy.

Alternatives - None.

Constraints - Long drive, high creek flows make beach access difficult (must climb over fence and/or wall)

Best Months to Hike: June July Aug Sept Oct Nov


PUNTA GORDA LIGHTHOUSE (near Petrolia)

Begin & End - The parking area at the end of Lighthouse Rd. near the mouth of the Mattole River,

hiking a loop south via Windy Ridge and back via the beach.

Length - 8.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 1,000 feet if hike via Windy Ridge.

Difficulty - Strenuous, particularly if hike via Windy Ridge.

Main Features - Coastal headland and beach views, the abandoned lighthouse.

Alternatives - Going both ways along the beach is a bit shorter but without the magnificent views. Constraints - Long drive, steep trail to beach at Windy Ridge. Usually strong northwesterly winds.

Ticks sometimes around the Lighthouse.

Best Months to Hike: Apr May June . Sept Oct


ROCKEFELLER REDWOODS to BURLINGTON (Rockefeller Forest & Humboldt Redwoods)

Begin & End - Begin and end at the parking area at the mouth of Bull Creek.

Length - 4.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Old growth redwood forest, river views

Alternatives - May be lengthened 0.75 mi. by continuing upstream past the Burlington crossing. Constraints - Bridge at Bull Creek only in during the summer.

Best Months to Hike: June July Aug Sept Oct Nov


THORNTON - PEAVINE RIDGE - POLE LINE - HOMESTEAD LOOP - (Rockefeller Redwoods)

Begin & End - Albee Creek Campground.

Length - 12 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 2,200 feet.

Difficulty - Strenuous.

Main Features - Coast Range mountain and prairie views.

Alternatives - None.

Constraints - None presently known.

Best Months to Hike: Apr May June . Oct Nov


WILLIAMS GROVE to HIDDEN SPRINGS (Humboldt Redwoods State Park)

Begin & End - Begin and end at the entry to Williams Grove approximately 1 mile north of Myers

Flat on the Avenue of the Giants.

Length - 7.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 300 feet each way for a total of 600 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Second growth redwood forest, Douglas-fir forest, river views.

Alternatives - The trail splits and enters Hidden Springs Campground at two locations (sites 75 & 133) -

one may be used when going and the other when returning.

It is also possible to return to Williams Grove via the Avenue of the Giants.

Constraints - None.

Best Months to Hike: May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov
