ARCATA FOREST

Begin & End - The playground at the east end of 14th St.

Length - Numerous options with distances varying accordingly.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 1,000 feet or more with ups and downs depending on the route chosen.

Difficulty - Variable depending on route taken but generally moderate.

Main Features - Second growth redwood forest.

Alternatives - Numerous trails that may be combined according to desires and conditions.

Constraints - Muddy, slippery areas on some trail alternatives during the rainy season.

Best Months to Hike: All Months

ARCATA FOREST (SUNNYBRAE UNIT)

Begin & End - The east end of Margaret Ln. in Sunny Brae.

Length - 1-mile loop (may be longer with further development).

Elevation Gain/Loss - 300 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Second growth redwoods.

Alternatives - May eventually tie into the main Arcata Forest.

Constraints - Not yet open to general public - special Arcata City permit required (as of July 2013),

trails can be quite muddy.

ARCATA MARSH

Begin & End - Either the South G St. or the end of South I St. parking area.

Length - Numerous options - a meandering hike can be 5 miles or more.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Birds (especially waterfowl and shorebirds during the winter) and flora.

Alternatives - Various trail combinations are available.

Constraints - None of consequence.

Best Months to Hike: All Months

AZALEA RESERVE (Azalea Ave., McKinleyville)

Begin & End - Parking area off Azalea Ave.

Length - 0.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 50 feet.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Blooming azaleas in particular which peaks in early June.

Alternatives - None of significance.

Constraints - None of concern.

Best Months to Hike: May, June

BIG LAGOON NORTH

Begin & End - The Big Lagoon Boat Ramp parking area ($1.00 fee).

Length - Approx. 8 miles to and from Dry Lagoon.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Beach and lagoon views.

Alternatives - May hike along the beach one way and return along the lagoon shore.

Constraints - $2.00 parking fee ($1.00 for seniors) at Big Lagoon.

BIG LAGOON SOUTH

Begin & End - The Big Lagoon Boat Ramp parking area ($2.00 fee - $1.00 for seniors).

Length - Approx. 4 miles to and from Agate Beach.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Beach and lagoon views, possible agate finds.

Alternatives - Could start and return to the Agate Beach parking area in Patrick’s Point St. Park.

Constraints - Steep trail to and from the beach and a day use fee if start from Patrick’s Point State Park.

CENTERVILLE NORTH to EEL RIVER

Begin & End - The Centerville Beach parking area on Centerville Rd. west from Ferndale.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Ocean, dunes, Eel River mouth and estuary views. Possibly swans in the winter.

Alternatives - None.

Constraints - None unique.

Best Months to Hike: All Months EXCEPT June July Aug

CENTERVILLE SOUTH to FLEENER CREEK

Begin & End - The Centerville Beach parking area on Centerville Rd. west from Ferndale.

Length - 3.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 300 feet if return from Fleener Cr. along the Centerville Rd.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Ocean views and cliffs.

Alternatives - Hike south on the beach and return by climbing from the mouth of Fleener Cr. to the Centerville     Rd. Beach erosion may may make passage to Fleener Cr. unsafe even at low tide.

Constraints - Tidal conditions, trail to the road from the beach at Fleener Cr. is fairly steep.

CLAM BEACH to LITTLE RIVER MOUTH

Begin & End - The beach access parking area at the south end of the Clam Beach Frontage Road.

Length - 4.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Great walking on wet sand.

Alternatives - Could start from the County beach access parking area at the north end of the Clam Beach Frontage Rd. which would shorten the hike to approx. 3.0 miles.

Constraints - Soft sand from the parking area to and from the beach.

CLAM BEACH to MAD RIVER MOUTH

Begin & End - The beach access parking area at the north end of the Clam Beach County Park frontage road.

Length - 5 miles depending on the location of the mouth of the Mad River.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features -Views of the river mouth. Great sand to walk on.

Alternatives - Start hike from the south end of the Clam Beach County Park frontage road.

Constraints - Wading across Strawberry Cr., soft sand from parking area to shoreline.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Trail Head - 11 miles


COLD SPRING LOOP (6 Rivers National Forest)

Begin & End - The parking area on the east side of Forest Highway 1 approximately 2.5 miles south

of the main parking area at Horse Mt.

Length - 3 miles

Elevation Gain/Loss - 300 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Vistas across Redwood Creek watershed, old growth Douglas-fir, spring flowers. fall colors.

Alternatives - The hike could be shortened by about half by returning to the parking area when Cold Spring is reached.

Constraints - One steep section up or down depending which way the loop is hiked, winter snow may block access, dried out in summer, trail not well defined, hunters during deer season.

C.R. CAMPUS/BOTANICAL GARDEN (College of the Redwoods)

Begin & End - The south parking area adjacent to the Botanical Garden.

Length - 3.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 200 feet.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Campus views, garden and its flowers.

Alternatives - There are two somewhat separate hikes, the campus and the garden, and either

could be eliminated which would cut the distance essentially in half.

Constraints - Classes in session, flowers seasonal, muddy on east side of north ponds. Garden not open

every day and there is a $5.00 per person entry fee.

DEAD MAN’S DROP (Manila)

Begin & End - The Manila Community Center.

Length - 4-mile loop.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 75 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Coastal forest, dunes and ocean views.

Alternatives - For a portion of the hike, may follow the pipeline road or hike along the beach.

Constraints - Portions of the trail not well marked.

Best Months to Hike: Jan Feb Mar Apr May . Sept Oct Nov Dec

EEL RIVER ESTUARY PRESERVE (Wildlands Conservancy)

Begin & End - The parking area for the Wildlands Conservancy at the end of Russ Lane (off Centerville Rd. immediately west of Fern Cottage).

Length - 6 miles of trails.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Eel River Bottom grasslands and pasture, flowers and birds, Eel River estuary.

Alternatives - There are 6 miles of trails.

Constraints - Requires a Wildlands Conservancy guide (contact David Erickson - david.e@twc-ca.org or

     (1)     672-4725.  

Footing can be very wet in winter.

EUREKA WATERFRONT

Begin & End - The Del Norte St. parking area in Eureka includes walking north to R St. and the bridge across Humboldt Bay.

Length - 6 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil. Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - The Eureka waterfront.

Alternatives - Could reverse the direction of the hike. Many opportunities to take detours such as to the rail crossing of Eureka Slough.

Constraints - None.

Best Months to Hike: All Months

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Trail Head - 10 miles


FORTUNA RIVER WALK

Begin & End - The parking area for the River Lodge Conference Center going to the mouth of the Van Duzen River.

Length - 5.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Views of the Eel River from the levee and the mouth of the Van Duzen River.

Alternatives - None

Constraints - May be windy, especially in the spring, high water may limit the hike to the levee.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Trail Head - 25 miles


GRIZZLY CREEK & CHEATHAM GROVE (Van Duzen River)

Begin & End - There are two separate hikes: the first from the Grizzly Creek Park parking area and the

second from the Cheatham Grove parking area by the bridge at the west end of the grove.

Length - 2.5 miles at Grizzly Creek Park and 1 mile at Cheatham Grove.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 200 feet at Grizzly Creek Park, nil at Cheatham Grove.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Old growth redwoods, Van Duzen River, nice fall colors possible.

Alternatives - There are alternative trails at Grizzly Creek Park and a single loop trail at Cheatham Grove.

Constraints - Grizzly Creek Park may not be open to the public allowing access only to north side trails, the footbridge crossing the river to the south side trails may not be in place. None at Cheatham Grove.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Cheatham Grove - 24 miles (or 26 miles to Grizzly Creek)


GUTHRIE CREEK & FLEENER CREEK

Begin & End - Begin and end at the respective parking areas on Centerville Rd. south of the former Naval Station.

Length - 4 miles (for both hikes to the beach and back).

Elevation Gain/Loss - Each 300 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Interesting coastline with eroded cliffs.

Alternatives - 2 separate hikes are proposed at Guthrie Cr. and at Fleener Cr.; each from the road to the

beach and along the beach as tidal conditions allow.

Constraints - The lower few hundred feet of the Guthrie Creek trail is rather steep might be quite muddy and poorly maintained.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Fleener Creek Trail Head - 31 miles (or 33 miles to Guthrie Creek)


HAMMOND TRAIL

Begin & End - Usually the Hiller Park parking area in McKinleyville though other locations along the trail could be used.

Length - There are several alternatives.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Depending on route, up to 200 feet.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Great views of the ocean and the lower Mad River

Alternatives - Several alternatives especially incorporating the trails through Hiller Park and the Mad River Bluffs area west of the Hammond Trail.

Constraints - None for most routes, the trail along the river from Hammond Bridge to School Road may be

quite muddy in winter and spring.

HEADWATERS FOREST

Begin & End - The parking area at the end of Elk River Rd.

Length - 6 miles to and from the S. Fork Elk River bridge.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil for the basic hike.

Difficulty - Easy though the extension is fairly strenuous.

Main Features - Pass through site of the former company logging town of Falk, riparian habitat.

Alternatives - The hike may be extended another 3.5 miles by continuing past the bridge and up the mountain for an elevation gain of approx. 1,000 feet and around a loop that passes through old growth redwood forest.

Constraints - None for the trail to the bridge but the trail up the mountain might be muddy.

HIKSHARI TRAIL & ELK RIVER (South Eureka)

Begin & End - The parking area at the west end of Truesdale St., Eureka.

Length - 4.5 miles if go to the end of the Elk River spit.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Birds, mouth of Elk River and Eureka’s only sandy beach.

Alternatives - None.

Constraints - Tide.

HORSE MT. (SNOW SHOE)

Begin & End - The main Horse Mt. parking area and going south on Forest Highway 1 to the intersection with Road 5N10.

Length - 3 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 200 feet (100 feet in each direction).

Difficulty - Moderate (especially if your not in shape for snowshoeing).

Main Features - Mountain views of Trinity Alps and even Mt. Shasta with snow cover.

Alternatives - Other forest roads or cross country.

Constraints - Snow availability.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Trail Head - 35 miles


HUMBOLDT BAY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE & HOOKTON SLOUGH (South Humboldt Bay)

Begin & End - Two separate hikes with the first at the Refuge headquarters and second at the

Hookton Slough dock off Hookton Rd.

Length - 2.5 miles for the Refuge hike and 3 miles for the Hookton Slough hike.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Birds, marsh views.

Alternatives - None.

Constraints - Few birds in the summer.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Refuge - 18 miles (Refuge to Hookton Slough 2.5 miles)


JACOBY CREEK (Arcata)

Begin & End - The parking area at the west end of Jacoby Creek Rd. and hike to the end of the City

property where the main trail turns up hill.

Length - 6 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Jacoby Creek, riparian forest.

Alternatives - None

Constraints - Special City of Arcata permit required (not yet an official City trail), creek flows affecting

crossings (there are no bridges).

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Trail Head - 9 miles


LANPHERE DUNES

Begin & End - Begin and end at the end of the access road from Lanphere Rd.

Length - 3 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Dune vegetation, dune views.

Alternatives - May be shortened by trail selection and may be lengthened by hiking into the Ma-l’el Dunes

to the south.

Constraints - Need to obtain permission from Friends of the Dunes and be led by an authorized docent.

LETZ ROAD to MAD RIVER MOUTH (Hammond Trail)

Begin & End - The parking area at the north end of Letz Rd. across the freeway from the Airport.

Length - 2 miles (depending on where the mouth of the Mad River is).

Elevation Gain/Loss - 200 feet.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Views of the dunes and shoreline from the observation area and of the mouth of the

Mad River.

Alternatives - Could hike to and from Hiller Park, could hike the beach north from the Mad River to at least

the mouth of Strawberry Creek

Constraints - Gated access to beach closed for snowy plover protection during the nesting/fledgling period.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Trail Head - 8.5 miles


LOLETA RAILROAD TUNNEL

Begin & End - The parking area beside the railroad near the Loleta Cheese Factory.

Length - 3 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Old railroad right-of-way and 0.5-mile long tunnel under Table Bluff.

Alternatives - Possibly may be lengthened by starting a bit south of Loleta.

Constraints - Flashlights needed when walking in the tunnel, there may be water at the south end of the

tunnel during winter and early spring.

MAD RIVER HATCHERY to BLUE ROCK (Mad River near Blue Lake)

Begin & End - The Blue Lake Fish Hatchery.

Main Features - River.

Alternatives - May be shortened by selecting a closer swimming hole.

Constraints - River flow (requires wading across the river), trespassing on Green Diamond land.

MAD RIVER BEACH PARK NORTH to MOUTH of the MAD RIVER

Begin & End - The parking area at the end of Mad River Rd.

Length - 5 miles. but varies depending on the current location of the mouth of the Mad River.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Dune, ocean, and river views.

Alternatives - May be hiked as a loop by following the river one way and the beach the other.

Constraints - Tide both on the beach possible flooding along the river at high tide.

MAD RIVER BEACH PARK SOUTH to LANPHERE DUNES

Begin & End - The parking area at the end of Mad River Rd.

Length - 3 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Dune vegetation, views from the dunes across the Arcata Bottom area.

Alternatives - May be hiked as a loop by hiking south along the beach and then returning by the trail behind

the dunes.

Constraints - Winter flooding of trail behind the dunes.

Best Months to Hike: All months except Jan & Feb

MA-L’EL DUNES

Begin & End - The Ma-l’el Dunes parking lot at the north end of Manila or the parking area north of the Sierra Pacific Mill by the Mad River Slough.

Length - 4 miles depending on route taken.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 50 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate to easy.

Main Features - Dunes, ocean, and slough views.

Alternatives - Several route alternatives exist including hiking along the beach, across the big dunes, or

through the dune forest.

Constraints - Soft sand if hike in the high dune area, some possible muddy areas, poor signage for some sections.

MOONSTONE BEACH to CAMEL ROCK

Begin & End at Moonstone Beach Parking Area.

Length - 2 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - none.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Spectacular rugged coastal views.

Constraints - Only suitable at extreme low tides and when the river does not hug the bluff.

Best Months to Hike: All months except December

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Trail Head - 13 miles


PATRICK’S POINT RIM TRAIL

Begin & End - The Agate Beach trailhead parking area or the Palmer Point parking area.

Length - 4 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Coastal headland and beach views.

Alternatives - May be shortened by not making side excursions such as to Wedding Rock and lengthened by returning by a more circuitous route.

Constraints - One steep, unimproved pitch that may be circumvented by looping through the Abalone Campground. Day use fee charged.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Agate Beach Trail Head - 22.5 miles


PATRICK’S POINT to BIG LAGOON (Patrick’s Point State Park)

Begin & End - The Agate Beach trailhead parking area.

Length - 5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 200 ft.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Coastal bluff and beach views, agates.

Alternatives - Hike north on the beach to Big Lagoon. Could use the inland trail for one leg of the hike.

Constraints - The trail down to Agate Beach is fairly steep and its condition needs to be checked. Day use

fee charged. Some muddy spots on the inland trail and it may not have been recently cleared of brush.

ROHNER PARK (Fortuna)

Begin & End - The parking area at Rohner Park at the southeast end of down town Fortuna.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Mostly second growth redwood, nice views of Eel River valley and Fortuna.

Alternatives - Some choices of trails.

Constraints - None.

Best Months to Hike: All Months

RUSS PARK (Ferndale)

Begin & End - Either at the Fireman’s Park in Ferndale or parking area off Grizzly Bluff Road 0.3 mi. east of downtown Ferndale.

Length - 3 miles (varies depending on alternatives chosen).

Elevation Gain/Loss - 400 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Views of bottom lands and Ferndale, visit to the Ferndale Cemetery.

Alternatives - Various trails may be put together for the hike.

Constraints - Muddy areas.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Fireman’s Park Parking Area - 25.5 miles


SAMOA BEACH

Begin & End - The parking area across from XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Length - 5.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - none.

Difficulty -Moderate, all on sand.

Main Features - Ocean views.

Alternatives - Weather and seas permitting, hike to end of jetty and back adds about 1 mile.

Constraints - Sand all the way except on Jetty. Jetty can be dangerous if seas and/or tide are high.

SEQUOIA PARK (Eureka)

Begin & End - The parking area at Sequoia Park near the playground or at the duck pond.

Length - 1 mile.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 100 feet.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Mostly second growth redwood, duck pond.

Alternatives - Various trails may be hiked.

Constraints - Trails not always well maintained.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Trail Head - 10 miles


SOUTH FORK OF THE TRINITY (Shasta-Trinity National Forest)

Begin & End -The parking area at the end of the South Fork Rd. that goes south just across the South Fork Trinity Highway 299 bridge. The trail leads to a former crossing of the South Fork of the Trinity.

Length - 8 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 300 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate to strenuous.

Main Features - Canyon views, flowers.

Alternatives - May turn back at Hell’s Half Acre Creek.

Constraints - Long drive, poison oak, heat, need to verify trail condition which has some narrow and treacherous spots.

STONE LAGOON BEACH

Begin & End - Stone Lagoon NORTH Parking Area.

Length - 3.5 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - Nil.

Difficulty - Easy.

Main Features - Coastal and lagoon views with spectacular cliffs at north end at low tide.

Alternatives - None.

Constraints - Most attractive at low tides.

Best Months to Hike: All Months except December.

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Trail Head - 31.5 miles


STREELOW CREEK TRAIL (Prairie Creek State Park)

Begin & End - Prairie Creek Visitor Center. Hike south to Streelow Creek Trail and return same way.

Length - 6 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 300ft.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Old growth redwood forest, riparian habitat.

Constraints - None unique. Unsure of Streelow Creek Trail condition.

Alternatives - For shorter hike, Park at Trillium Falls parking area off Davidson Road. Hike north on Davidson Road to Streelow Creek Trail and then west to Davidson Road and return same way.

Constraints - Vehicles along Davidson Road, especially during summer.

Best Months to Hike: April through December

Driving Distance from Arcata Plaza to Visitor Center - 41.5 miles (or 38.5 to Davidson Rd)


TABLE BLUFF NORTH to SOUTH JETTY

Begin & End - The parking area at the base of Table Bluff.

Alternatives - May hike part way on the inland side of the dunes.

Constraints - Dry sand, tide.

TITLOW HILL to Trail #5N10 (Horse Mt. Area)

Begin & End - The parking area approximately 2.5 miles south of the main parking area at Horse Mt. Hike to Forest Rd. 5N10 and back.

Length - 3 miles.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 600 feet.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Main Features - Mountain vistas including Trinity Alps & Mt. Shasta, the top of Titlow Hill, flowers,

abandoned cabin.

Alternatives - Hiking short spur roads and down to Cold Spring may be added.

Constraints - Snow may limit access in spring.

TRINIDAD to ELK HEAD

Begin & End - The Trinidad St. Beach parking area off Stagecoach Rd. Hike north past College Cove to Elk Head and return to hike around Trinidad Head.

Length - 5 miles.

Difficulty - Moderate.

Elevation Gain/Loss - 400 feet (footage the total of both going and returning).

Main Features - Coastal forest, off-shore rocks and ocean vistas, view of Trinidad.

Alternatives - May either hike on the beach or stay on the upland just north of Trinidad Head.

Constraints - Tide (if walk on the beach), some fairly step portions on Trinidad Head.
